Booty shaking is hard twerk.
There was a time when Miley Cyrus was in the running for America’s Sweetheart – at least until her 2013 VMAs twerkfest with Robin Thicke let the world know that the former Hannah Montana was no longer a child. Not only did her backside popping bring the dance move to millions of screens, but it helped push the word “twerk” into the Oxford Dictionary.
Of course, Cyrus was far from the first to do the dance move, which traces its lineage to West Africa, where the Mapouka dance — which emphasizes moving the backside — has been going on for centuries. That dance never went away. It gradually evolved throughout the African diaspora until it became a major part of New Orleans bounce music culture in the 1990s, also impacting reggae and dancehall music.
Big Freedia, the Bounce Queen of New Orleans, had been twerking for years before Miley came along. Heck, after the 2013 VMAs, Freedia set a Guinness World Record for the most people twerking simultaneously, which went down in New York City’s Times Square. Since then, everyone from Lizzo to City Girls has continued to booty pop on camera, on stage and in our hearts.
But Freedia and Miley aren’t the only artists shake their tail feathers. Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Lizzo and even Taylor Swift have gotten their twerk on. Take a look at the top 13 twerkers in pop music. Some get a reluctant pat on the back for effort. Others get a round of applause for skill.
Taylor Swift and the Girls
Taylor, and a gang of other ladies that don’t have much to shake, poke their tails out. We can only hope they were on beat. But hey, if effort’s rewarded, their acts deserve a little applause.
Selena Gomez in the Middle of Nowhere
Selena Gomez gets props here for getting down in the middle of a field a winding up for some light twerkage.
Vanessa Hudgens Gets Down for Leno
Singer/actress Vanessa Hudgens showed out on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. This is more so her popping her stomach and back, but we see where she was going.
Ariana Grande on a Party Bus
Love that Ariana Grande, before becoming a chart-topping force of nature, gave it a go, but the twerk doesn’t seem to be her forte.
Miley Cyrus Twerks as a Unicorn
Before Cyrus’ twerk circus at the VMAs, there was this: Miley donning this unicorn costume and showing the world her then-unknown knack for twerking. To J. Dash’s “WOP,” Miley does it like an A student of Twerk U. The VMAs must have been her graduation ceremony.
Rihanna During Tour Rehearsal
This is twerk lite right here. Still, during Rihanna’s rehearsal for her 2013 Diamonds Tour, the star learns some moves for her strip club knocker “Pour It Up” and teases her crew with some sexy switching.
Ciara's "Body Party" Video
It’s a party and we’re all invited. Really though, Future is the one getting the best experience at it. Ci’ winds and twerks for him during the party with her crew, then gives him a private show later on.
Beyonce's "Check On It"
Twerking may be big on a pop level now, but do remember that Beyonce was singing about it and showing the moves back in 2006. That’s a Houston girl for you.
Nicki Minaj in Busta Rhymes' "Twerk It" Video
Between spitting bars in her island accent, Nicki Minaj backs up her wagon on Busta Rhymes in his “Twerk It” video. See how easy and effortless it is for her? Don’t let her fool you. These are tricks that should not be tried at home.
Lizzo on 'SNL'
Lizzo has been twerking like an absolute pro for years, but the rapper-singer-songwriter-flautist brought twerking to a much different realm while hosting/performing on Saturday Night Live in 2022. Lizzo twerked while playing the flute to “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in one memorable sketch, putting the ‘ass’ in classical.
Cardi B In "Twerk" Video
When Cardi B and City Girls got painted up in animal prints for the “Twerk” video in 2019, well, they weren’t messing around. The video is a four-minute master class in booty shaking, body movement and self-confidence.
City Girls In the "Twerkulator" Video
Not everyone who does twerk should twerk. But few artists beyond City Girls — the Miami hip-hop duo of Yung Miami and JT — have earned the right to put the word ‘twerk’ into their song title. On 2021’s “Twerkulator,” the duo shakes their money-maker and what their mama gave them over an unstoppable banger of a track; and on the 2019 single “Twerk,” Cardi B joins City Girls to do just that.
Big Freedia (Pretty Much at All Times)
It’s hard to pinpoint just one twerking moment for Big Freedia, the Queen of New Orleans bounce. From the oversized monster twerkfest in the “Y’all Get Back Now” video to her reality series Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce to leading the largest group of simultaneous twerkers ever in 2013 in Times Square, you can’t go wrong with Freedia. Pay attention: This is how it’s done.
