スティルライフオブメモリーズ
Directed by Hitoshi Yazaki
Synopsis
Haruma is an up-and-coming photographer who is getting full exposure at a photo exhibition in a Tokyo photo gallery. Rei, a beautiful curator at the Yamanashi Prefectural Art Museum, is fascinated by the photos she sees and calls Haruma to request a photo-shoot with an intimate part of herself as the subject. The only rules to this shoot are that no questions must be asked and Rei will be given the negatives. Haruma is initially surprised but goes along with the job, however, Haruma’s pregnant girlfriend Natsumi grows frustrated over being kept in the dark about their work and jealousy develops in their relationship as passions blow up.

when you combine japanese arthouse cinema and eroticism, you get a work of beautiful art. It's not one that I loved, but I do appreciate its meaning.

Photography and material weight: a study on power and desire. It is predicted on how Yazaki's very clinical style plays off the salacious subject matter. So the movies doubles on itself, the actions couldn't be more overwhelming with material flesh, but the film camera remains a distancing device.

worst watch of this year so far.
the entire film can be summed up in this way:
1. the actress undresses.
2. the actor takes pictures of her genitals with a camera.
3. rinse and repeat.thats it.
i saw this because of the director Hitoshi Yazaki whose film "Strawberry Shortcakes" i really really liked. but i won't watch or recommend this. -

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A photographer's love for his subject can transcend boundaries.
Also, this film explores one's own desires. Like Natsumi, she dances in the silence getting mixed with the nature whether it's water or the gallery.
I understood the basic premise and the importance of female genitalia. The scene where baby girl is born and Haruma looks at his wife's genitalia signifies the importance. Also, orgasm is being explored.
Still I feel I haven't fully understood what director Hitoshi Yazaki wants to convey. It's a bit difficult to grasp.

Review by Niels Matthijs (Onderhond) ★★★½
I've seen quite a few Japanese dramas, but this one was quite peculiar. It's a surprisingly demure film, certainly considering its premise. It's also probably a bit too artsy for its own good, but after a somewhat rough start, director Yazaki manages to create something quite beautiful and magical.
Haruma is a photographer who specializes in black and white photography. One day Rei visits one of Haruma's exhibitions. She's quite taken with his work and commissions a photoshoot. Haruma somewhat reluctantly agrees and finds himself conflicted when he is asked to photograph Rei's genitalia.
The story about an artist becoming infatuated and somewhat overwhelmed by a new and rather taboo subject certainly isn't new, but Yazaki's particular blend of cold…

While this is certainly a laudable exploration on identity and desire, it's also way too inscrutable on pretty much every level. The initial premise is compelling because it raises the possibility of revelation through dismantling the self. That never really happens though as the film mainly just goes in circles.
The real highlight is from Isao, whose masterful framing creates a sense of forlorn alienation that the narrative lacks. It's inquisitive without being ostentatious. If Hitoshi keeps working with him, all is good.

I simply do not understand, aside from the main point which began roughly but found it's footing in shaky manner later on I failed to see any actual importance in the rest of the sequences that provided little to no meaning to the ruling idea. Very vague and has no markings whatsoever but maybe I just don't understand this enough...all I know is that it was not enjoyable

another attempt to redefine pornography as an art form, which I agreed that it is, but eventually failed as the film ends up portraying its female characters as either objects of desire or baby-making machines, which inevitably reiterates so much how sexist these types of films usually are.

It feels very raw and at the same moment feels precisely choreographed.. Director manages to keep it exactly on the fine line between both
This movie, although, starts off as something that'd go on to become Philosophically Rich, ends rather too short of what it was meant to achieve
One of the very few movies, I wish, would've been longer.
