Ex's OC history 1: Magenta (2024)

ID: A drawing. A phone-like device displaying current Magenta is turning Magenta's second iteration who is crying into current Magenta. The title reads "OC History" with smaller text below reading "#1: Magenta" End of ID

You've likely found this from the other Magenta image. Here is some of the history of her if you are curious.

You might've figured out that Magenta's an Algodoo reference.

Magenta, at least my Magenta was not based off any specific Magenta from any Algicosathlon series, really. During the time that she was a parody character, I thought of the most common things that were put on female characters, as I noticed that they tend to have extra features that male characters do not have. I mostly saw hair bows, skirts, and eyelashes. However, the way I designed Magenta is different, because she also draws inspiration from other stick figures as well, such as the ones from Animator vs Animation.

She lacks a face, like in some Algicosathlon series. I made the observation that ones with a story will almost always have characters with faces, so that they can do things like show emotion. I also noticed that while bows or skirts may appear independently, most instances of series where there are characters wearing a bow or a skirt are ones where the characters have faces. However, there are still many series where the characters have faces, but they do not have any other way to differentiate gender besides eyelashes. Though, this seems to apply to mostly older Algicosathlon series, as I haven't been keeping up with more modern series. From what I have seen from the thumbnails of newer series however, they do have more than bows and skirts, and now I see characters with other accessories.

Another thing to note however, is that my Magenta has hair. While I made her, I have actually never seen hair on any Algodoo character, so it was something I added myself for an unknown reason. She did have older, more detailed designs that featured hair, and I assume the hair just stayed as I redesigned her and made her what she is now. While I still don't see hair often, I believe I have seen characters with hair on thumbnails of newer Algicosathlon series.

Marbles, and Algodoo were a memorable part of my childhood. When I was younger, I loved marbles, and I would watch marble run videos all the time. I loved the song Marble Machine. I would play marble run games on the Roblox platform, and I even wanted my own marble run kit, which I could never afford. I believe that was why I watched many Algodoo videos when I was young. It was my favorite kind of video back then, and I would watch entire Algicosathlon series, or wait for new episodes of a Marble Siege series. I even wanted the Algodoo software myself, though I couldn't afford it (but now that it's free, I can play around with it whenever I want.) so I was never able to get it when I was young.

One thing that I was particularly interested in, however, was Magenta. It was something that felt more frequent as a kid, honestly, because I realized now that there is not that many mentions of the Magenta Curse stuff now. It is an older meme (if I can call it that) after all and I don't know if newer videos will even mention a Magenta Curse, but I still find it to be nostalgic.

Years later, I remember Algodoo videos. I start watching them again, realizing that female characters seem to for some reason have different features than male ones, which I have explained before. I also remembered the Magenta Curse, and I thought it was funny. This resulted in the creation of Magenta, a joke character. She was... VERY different back then. I will show you old art. (None of them had a watermark, I didn't post them anywhere. There'll just be a makeshift one instead.)

Ex's OC history 1: Magenta (1)

ID: Drawing of Magenta's oldest design, a magenta stick figure with short hair, a skirt, and a hair bow. What's different is that her skirt is pleated, she has actual hands, her hair is simplistic, and most notably she has a face. She's holding up her middle finger while grinning. There is pink text with black outlines reading "Magenta..." with small text in the bottom right corner reading "Experiments with art styles #1: Magenta......" End of ID

I believe this may be the first iteration of her. She was kind of like a troll, and was a trickster sort of character. As you can see, she has a face. Not much else to say here, she's just a joke character that existed.

Ex's OC history 1: Magenta (2)

ID: Pixel art of Magenta's second design. Still a stick figure, but with more detail. Her clothes are darker, and she wears a pencil skirt, a cropped shirt, an off-shoulder jacket with sleeves that hide her hands, light pink knee-length socks, boots, a silver necklace, a spiked choker with similar bracelets on her thighs. Her hair is more messy, her eyes are pink, and she has eyelashes and eyeshadow. She is smiling, looking at the viewer, and a singular fang is visible. She is standing on her right leg with her left leg bent. Her right hand is on her hip and her left arm is raised. End of ID

This is another iteration of her. I made this version, because I eventually did want to make my own Algodoo series, with original designs. That didn't happen, though. I still like this design, and sometimes I miss it. This Magenta was a lot more different than the current Magenta, making the first Magenta ironically resemble the one we all know and love the most. I did try to make a game with RPG Maker XP, which explains why the image I am showing you is pixel art. I didn't end up actually making it however. The gameplay of the was simple, beat up two of these characters for keys. I think the ending of this game was going to be Magenta releasing some random powerful being into the world and dooming everyone, or something like that.

This Magenta was mischievous and playful, and she was excited very easily. And of course, she was able to give people curses. She had two best friends, Yellow and Cyan. They all had magic, Yellow using electricity and Cyan using ice, though Magenta had... I don't know, it's similar to the Ghost type from Pokémon, or the Drain attribute from Yokai Watch.

ID: A drawing. A yellow hand, belonging to Yellow holds up a picture of Magenta's second iteration, who is smiling. There is a pink aura coming from it. It is turning another character that is crying into Magenta. He is mint green, and while not clear one half of his hair is more vibrant. He wears a visor, an apron, and a tie, all dull green, and a white shirt. End of ID

If you're wondering what the thumbnail is based off. The other character was either named Spring Green or Mint Green.

ID: A drawing of the new magenta's first image. There are some differences, such as her being taller, having grey shading, and slightly longer straight hair that is separated into two parts. End of ID

Now here's the first image of her new design, actually made a few months ago. It's cropped, since I don't want to reveal too many things. She's a little tall here and the shadows aren't blue, and the hair is weird, but I didn't think of that at the time. She kept most of her personality, though all of her lore ended up rewritten. Also I took her face away.

One may ask: Why did I change her design?

First, I didn't want to draw a detailed design over and over. The other Magenta was for a game, so I wouldn't have to do it unless I draw every cutscene, but Magenta was moved to another project, where I will draw her over and over again. Her design ended up heavily simplified. I wouldn't even consider making that Shimeji in the other post if I went with the old design. Second, she wouldn't fit what she was moved to with her old lore. Third... I just wanted to make something that I like, honestly. While I like the previous iteration, I like the new one more. It feels more meaningful, too. Sure, she doesn't have a face to show expression with, though I can still show emotion through movements and body language. And she's cuter, though in the right setting I could probably make her a little creepy.

Is she still an Algodoo reference? Of course, just less now that she's now her own character. She can even exist without it, but that doesn't change her history. This post is really more about this OC than Algodoo, probably. Magenta's actually one of my favorite characters from the project she's in that I made, too. I can't wait to show that off, if I ever find the motivation to draw more (I haven't been feeling like drawing recently, it's why Eternalgia 02 isn't done yet.) then I will.

I'm not sure if I will tell more about the history of particular OCs, since some of them probably don't have much, but if I feel like something is interesting enough to tell, then I will. The other OCs in that other post, Fir and Kay, also had some history, along with the project they were originally from before it got merged into the one Magenta was put in. Maybe I will tell about Fir or Kay one day, but this is a post about Magenta.

Anyways, if you spent time reading that, then I really hope that it was something worth reading, even if you're not interested in Algodoo or my OCs. I'm not sure how long it'll take me to post again, but I hope I will get the motivation to do so one day.

One last thing, sometimes I wonder what would happen if you gathered every Magenta character from every Algodoo series and made them meet...
