<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (1)

Born May 29th, 1958 in Hastings, MN to Cal and Emeline Hamilton. Nancy was the favorite of 8 kids, much to the dismay of her five sisters Suzy, Karen, Gloria, Lori and Ann; and two brothers, Pete and Steve. Like her Dad, she was athletic and it was scholarships for volleyball and track that brought her to Mankato State University for college, where she would meet her college sweetheart, Bob. They married August 30th, 1980 and remained in the Mankato area to raise us, their 2 daughters, Alissa and Emily. As a mother, her love and support was endless. She raised us to know that we were creative, intelligent, independent women who had no limits to what we could be in this life - and she did it all, while wearing some pretty amazing tracksuits. She was an avid reader and severely technology-challenged, both of which she lovingly passed on to her kids. Her true calling was caring for people. Whether it was making sure we had the best childhood or doting on her 8 grandkids, Mom found joy in doing for others. For over 16 years, she took pride in caring for her clients at River Valley Hearing. She would often visit them at their home, on weekends, and attend their personal celebrations. Many of her clients became close friends and when she was sick, they showed up for her in so many ways. She was truly grateful for this. Her later years were spent aging in reverse, having unexplainable luck playing bingo, and making her grandkids the center of her universe. Ivy, Bailey, CJ, Milo, Max, Elliott, Azalea and Quinn are undeniably the reason she fought to stay as long as she did. She cherished every minute of time spent with them. She died August 2nd, 2024 at home, surrounded in love by her husband, daughters, and son-in-law. We held her hands and talked to her, while the very woman who watched us take our first breaths, took her last. Though we did not get enough time, in her 66 short years, she made sure to leave us with enough love that will surely carry us through the rest of our lives. We will forever be devastated by the hole left by our beautiful Mom, but it is not her death that we wish to remember, but how incredibly grateful we are that she lived.Mom was welcomed home by her parents, Cal and Emeline Hamilton; and nephew, Mike King. She is celebrated and remembered by her loving husband of 43 years, Bob Green; daughters, Alissa (Jadon) Witte and Emily (Dan) Dinsmore Green; grandchildren, Ivy, Bailey, CJ, Elliott, Azalea and Quinn Witte, and Milo and Max Dinsmore; and her siblings, Suzy (Tim) Johnson, Karen (Bob) King, Gloria (Kevin) Trahms, Lori (Hubert) Serreyn, Ann (Bruce) Jorgensen, Steve Hamilton, and Pete Hamilton; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. A private family service was held August 16th at Crossview Covenant Church. Friends and family are invited to join us in celebrating her life on Friday, August 30th from 2-6pm at The Capitol Room in St Peter. Donations in her honor can be made to My Happy Place - Mankato, which is very near and dear to our heart. They created a beautiful space for Mom to rest and recover throughout her journey with cancer and we would love to help continue that blessing for other families.

<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (8)

Paul A. Romberg, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and Air Force Veteran passed away on August 5, 2024 in Rochester, MN. Paul was born in Mankato, MN on November 30,1952 to Shirley and Aaron Romberg. After graduating from Mankato High School in 1971 and completing one semester at Mankato State University, Paul entered the Air Force. He was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha,NE. As luck would have it, Paul didn't return to his North Mankato hometown for a visit with his family. On August 10, 1973, he met Mary, an Iowa girl. Paul could recall the details of that meeting for decades to come, which is remarkable given many men can't even recall their wife's birthday. This encounter would lead to almost 50 years of marriage and a son, Benjamin, who was born on the exact date, August 10, seven years later.Paul and Mary returned to North Mankato, MN shortly after their marriage. Paul completed his Geography degree from Mankato State University in1979. Upon graduation Paul and Mary moved to Laurel, MD to work on the Flood Insurance Program. It was in Maryland that Ben was born. Ben's impending arrival had Paul dealing with an abundance of beltway traffic as Ben was a few days past his due date. Paul always joked that his son was running late from the very beginning. Each time he told the story, the beaming pride he felt for his wife and son shone through with every word. After three years in Maryland, Paul and Mary moved to Omaha, NE to be closer to both of their families. The early 90's Paul and Mary returned to North Mankato, MN. In 2009, the family moved to Rochester, MN where Paul was the Mayo Purchasing Manager for the Outpatient Pharmacy until his retirement in 2016.In 2012 Paul was diagnosed with the beginning of Alzheimer's disease. From that moment on Paul was enrolled in Mayo's Alzheimer's Research study. Paul wanted his journey to serve a purpose and make a difference for others. He underwent over a decade of testing and scans and ultimately elected to donate his body to the study's researchers. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Cottage 4 staff at Cottagewood Senior Communities and Chad, his hospice nurse, for the exceptional care they provided Paul during his final year.Paul is survived by his devoted wife Mary; their son Benjamin (Jennie Lewin); siblings Ann (Doug) Williams and John (Tammy) Romberg; in-laws, Bob and Carol Besch, Bev Sill; aunts, Carmen Ulmen and Audrey Romberg, and many nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents.A visitation will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on August 19th, 2024 at 10:00 am followed by Mass beginning at 11:00 am, followed by lunch where family and friends can come together to celebrate Paul's life and share cherished memories.

<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (12)

Virginia E. Kuske was born October 30, 1939, in Gaylord, MN to Martin and Tena (Peters) Asmus. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, MN. Virginia graduated from Gaylord High School in 1957. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Concordia University, St. Paul. On August 6, 1960, Virginia married Donald H. Kuske at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, MN. Virginia and Donald owned and operated the Kuske's Hardware Hank in Dodge Center, MN from 1972 until 1997. Gin was widely known as "The Paint Lady," and loved the challenge of matching color samples that customers brought in. Additionally, Virginia served as the church organist, beginning when she was just 17, and continuing for 50 years. She also served as choir director at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodge Center, MN. She taught piano lessons from her home for many years.Gin liked to have a vegetable garden when Don was still living, and enjoyed mowing the lawn, insisting that she do so herself, even after getting her prosthetic leg because "no one else can do it right." She was a gifted seamstress, making clothes, costumes, accessories, and quilts for people she knew. Even as her health declined, she could be found with a sewing machine set up in nursing home rooms that she temporarily occupied, doing mending for staff and sewing bibs for other residents. Gin loved to cook, bake and collect recipes, even planning to make a pot of soup later on the day that she passed.Church was a big part of Gin's life, where she rang handbells, taught VBS, and belonged to mission organizations. She attended every Sunday and was never hesitant to let her pastors know her opinion of their sermons, good or bad. Gin loved music. She was still playing piano, sometimes accompanying church services at Kinship Pointe and always had music playing on her Alexa device. She loved listening to her daughter's and grandchildren's concerts online or in person. She especially loved church music and treasured her recent experience at her church's hymn festival. She is surely appreciating the music in heaven, and maybe even singing in the choir. She enjoyed animals very much and had two beloved Shih Tzus who were faithful companions to her in her later years. They accompanied her on her travels to see her children and other relatives in Nebraska, California, and Rhode Island, among other places. Gin will always be remembered for her independent spirit. <![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (29)

Kimberly 'Kim' Sue (Aho) Covey, age 65, passed away on Thursday July 25, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Kim was born February 7, 1959 in St. Peter, MN and graduated from Mankato East High School. She was married to her soulmate Gerald 'Jerry' Covey October 23, 1982, in Vernon Center, Minnesota. The two spent their lives together creating a garden oasis at their home outside of Good Thunder, Minnesota where they raised their two girls, Jenna and Katie. Kim was a voracious reader and instilled the love of the written word in her daughters, encouraging them to be strong women who could grow up to be whatever they wanted to be. She loved collecting crystal balls and decorating the house with extra magic for the seasons. She made a mean crock pot dinner and loved dancing to the kitchen radio. A champion for the underdog, Kim had a giant heart and would fight for the people that she loved the most. Kim had a career in sales, notably at Williams Diamond Center and Rooms and Rest Furniture where she shared her eye for beauty and design with the community. Kim was a talented photographer and enjoyed shooting pictures of the moon, her gardens, and especially, her cats. Most of all, Kim cherished spending time with her family—giggling with her girls in the tea house at the pond, walking down the gravel road and watching the sunset with Jerry, and sharing her megawatt smile with her granddaughter Inez. It was the quiet moments that she treasured the most. Her love and light will be missed by all who shared her journey. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Covey of Good Thunder; her daughter, Jenna Covey and son-in-law, Brian Shekleton of St. Louis Park; daughter Katherine Covey Spanier and son-in-law, Reggie Spanier, and granddaughter, Inez Spanier, of Northeast, Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her mother, Delores (Aho) Brown, step-father, Rev. Frank Brown; and brother, John John Aho. The family will be having a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kim's honor to The Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS).

<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (31)

The spirit of Susan Lee Kohls, age 74, of North Mankato, flew away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, MN. Susan peacefully passed away with the love of her life, husband Dale Haefner, and her daughter, Meredith O'Leary and son, Aaron O'Leary by her side. Susan, a wife, mother, and grandmother, will be remembered forever in the hearts of family and friends as a loving, kind, gentle, and witty human being. Susan was a woman of enormous intellect and an exceedingly generous heart.Susan was born in Mankato, MN, on May 18, 1950, to Adele and Kenny Kohls. She attended school in Mankato, where she met lifelong girlfriends, the 'Sue's and Barb.' This was the beginning of a recurring theme throughout Susan's life: Her charisma and authenticity left an impact on everyone she knew.Susan was compassionate and volunteered at various organizations that supported vulnerable women, at-risk youth, and terminally ill patients. As a Hospice volunteer, she provided respite and nurturing care for several families, one of which was Angeline Haefner's. During this time, Susan connected with Angie's youngest son, Dale. They fell in love and began a new chapter of their lives.Later in life, Susan became involved with the Guardian ad Litem program and was appointed by the Fifth Judicial District court, working in the Blue Earth and Nicollet County court systems. Susan advocated fiercely for children's best interests in juvenile protection cases, conducting various independent investigations and providing recommendations to the court. She took tremendous pride in her efforts to provide the best possible life for each child and was respected in her role. The bonds she built with her fellow advocates throughout her time as a Guardian became treasured friendships. In 2006, Susan became a Grandma, her proudest title. She and Dale played an instrumental role in raising Regan to be the incredible young woman she is today. They enjoyed cooking, watching The Golden Girls and 80's movies, chair dancing, trips to Schmidt's Meat Market, playing with her doll, Nicole, and spending time with the adorable rescue dog they picked out together, Reilly. She carried a 'brag book' in her purse with photos of Regan and would proudly describe each picture while flipping the pages. When kindergarten began, Susan was a staple in the school parking lot to wish Regan a 'fabulous first day.' She was the best listener and always gave Regan the most insightful advice.Music was a significant part of Susan's life. Music always played in her house, and she enjoyed taking extended drives in her car to listen to her favorite artists. A prerequisite when purchasing a vehicle was the speaker quality for this reason. She attended many excellent concerts and especially loved to attend and support her favorite musician, husband Dale Haefner, listening and watching him perform on the piano with City Mouse and other local and regional groups. Susan also shared her love of cooking and baking with her family. She gave Meredith a cookbook as a housewarming gift, full of recipes from memory without exact measurements, including the phrases "add a little but not a lot," "you'll smell it when it's ready," and "just call me with questions," Her Texas potatoes were one of a kind and the most frequently requested addition to family gatherings.Susan leaves an unimaginable void for her husband, Dale Haefner; daughter, Meredith O'Leary; sons, Aaron O'Leary and Colin O'Leary; granddaughter, Regan O'Leary; stepdaughters, Amelia (Brian) Jirak and Mariah Johnson Haefner; granddaughters, Aria and Everly Jirak; grandson, Roman Jirak; her beloved rescue terrier, Reilly; two sisters, Shar (Denny) Driggers and Sandy Berkowitz; and one brother, Duane Kohls, as well as many nieces and nephews. Susan is preceded in death by her parents.A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sunday, August 4th from 2-6 at Hooligan's in Mankato, MN. We will listen to her favorite music, look at her favorite photos and tell stories. Susan had a smile that could (and often did) light up a room, and she would want us all to remember her by doing something kind for others and making sure the people we care about know that we love them, something she never failed to do for those lucky enough to be loved by her. In honor of a woman who made the world a better place, memorials can be directed to any organization whose mission helps make that possible. One that was particularly close to Susan's heart was the Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS), a non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving forever homes for homeless cats and dogs.

<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (53)

Samuel "Sam" Paul Menne, 21, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away July 13th in a motorcycle accident when a car unexpectedly pulled in front of him. Sam was born on May 10, 2003 in Mankato, Minnesota to Paul and Mary Menne. He was the oldest of 10, a natural leader and was always helping others. When God called his family to Colorado, his sister was born. He became a big brother for the first time and immediately embraced the role. He also put on his first pair of hockey skates in the mountains near Pike's Peak, beginning his love of hockey which would continue through high school. Upon returning to Minnesota, he was blessed with his first little brother and he started hockey in full force. He eventually transitioned to goalie which suited his personality of being a rock solid protector for his family, friends and country. He was so excited to start school, meet friends and be independent. Sam loved his family, but friends were also very important to him. He was a people pleaser and loved to make people smile. He had such an inquisitive mind taking things apart and figuring out how they worked. His first science fair project was an electric generator, which would also become a meaningful part of his life in Sioux Falls. Sam genuinely enjoyed school and loved helping out. In his younger years he was a school patrol, enjoyed being a buddy reader and was a great big brother helping with his younger siblings at school. As he got older he volunteered to serve breakfast at school and joined Henderson's Sauerkraut Krew. He was also known to be found cleaning up the local parks, shoveling neighbors' driveways or walking with his siblings around town. He loved to be outside and was thrilled to attend a school trip to the Minnesota Boundary Waters. The love of the outdoors and fishing never left him. He was an active athlete competing in high school hockey, track, and cross country. There wasn't a board he couldn't ride; wakeboard, snowboard, longboard, surfboard, skimboard, and kneeboard. Although he broke a few bones he was a natural at learning new tricks. Fearlessly he attempted jumps, road waves and recorded many hours on his go-pro. Sam enjoyed working with his hands. He loved shop class, especially welding and wood working. He would later put those skills to use during his deployment. He was always working on his trucks. He was a hard worker whether it was milking cows on a dairy farm, in restaurants at Dairy Queen or Chick-fil-A, automotive work at TMS Automotive and Manlys, or as a field supervisor for installing fiber lines. His two favorite jobs were the US Army and Harvard Integrations in Sioux Falls. When Sam wasn't working he enjoyed time on the water both in his grandpa's fishing boat and on his family's boat enjoying water sports. He taught his siblings to water ski, wakeboard and kneeboard. He was the crazy kid you'd see slalom skiing with an American flag in hand. He also enjoyed gaming with family and friends. He was a very passionate person and could be heard at any hour talking loudly with his gaming crew. He also loved playing Minecraft with his siblings and loved teaching his youngest sisters how to game. Sam joined the US Army Reserves during his junior year and arrived at Fort Jackson, SC for basic training just 27 days removed from turning 17, making him one of the youngest Americans to complete basic training in modern times. After graduating basic training he returned home for his senior year and graduated from Le Sueur-Henderson High School. Following that he went to his specialized Army schooling to be a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic at the US Army Ordnance Corps & School at Fort Gregg-Adams in Virginia. After that, he joined his friends in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and attended Southeast Technical College to earn an AAS in Diesel Technology. Before completing his degree, the Nation called upon Sam and his Army Reserve unit, the 323 Chemical Company to deploy to Kuwait for a year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Spartan Shield). He returned home safely this spring. His military awards include the Army Accommodation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Medal with M Device.Following his deployment and before classes were to resume this fall, Sam was working at Harvard Integration, helping assemble giant diesel generators for some of the world's largest companies.Waiting in Heaven for Sam was his Uncle Nate and many other loved ones. Sam is now lovingly waiting in Heaven for his Mom, Dad, Lauren, Matthew, William, Elijah, Peter, Isaac, Josephine, Hazel, Charlotte, his dog Teddy, and many of his family and friends. Sam was never one for flowers and was always helping people. Therefore the family asks that In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Dollars for Scholars-Samuel Menne Scholarship Fund, PO Box 42, Le Sueur, MN 56058. This will provide help to other Le Sueur-Henderson students who desire to attend a 2 year tech school program. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 4:00-7:00 at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Dr., North Mankato, MN 56003 and will continue one hour prior to the service at church. His Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, July 20, 11:00 at Crossview Covenant Church, 2000 W Howard Dr., North Mankato, MN 56003. Sergeant Samuel Menne will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on July 24 at 12:30. This We'll Defend. Full Send.
